Cain’s Charm: In Memory of Bartleby Bloss

Tomorrow, Sunday, October 2, 2022, will mark one year since we lost Bartleby Bloss, an incredible human & you know that undoubtedly if you were lucky enough to meet him. My friend & my mentor and he is missed every single day.

There aren’t enough words to describe Bartleby. When people say, “You can ask me anything” or “There are no dumb questions”, he truly meant it. I would run around, following him around, asking questions and scribbling down the answers. Bartleby taught me the impact you can have on your community as a coffee roaster because he cared deeply about his community and taking care of others. He also showed me that I can be heard and that I am important. He loved art and inspired others to lean into their crafts and supported their art any way he could. We say all the time that Bartleby is everyone’s Number One Fan.

Both Bartleby and his partner Kay have an incredible love of dogs and heart for rescues — something we have in common that I really cherish. When we adopted our dog Rhys, they were so supportive and probably the happiest for us outside of ourselves — so much so that Bartleby insisted I take a week off to bond with our new puppy!! We would share dog photos all the time and Bartleby would send photos when they would put bandanas on the pups, calling them “bandana boys”. One of their three bandana boys is named Cain, a beautiful white shepherd mix with one & a half blue eyes and the best smile. The coffee blend in memory of Bartleby is called “Cain’s Charm” because when Bartleby and Kay adopted Cain from Happy Hearts German Shepherd Rescue in San Diego, they were his third and forever home. Third time’s a charm.

I miss Bartleby every day and hope that Cain’s Charm is a coffee that Bartleby would have been really excited to drink and be stoked that there is a coffee named after one of his bandana boys.
